This qualification is ideal for individuals who are looking to begin a career in the construction industry as a carpenter or joiner. You will develop the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to manufacture, assemble and install a range of structural and non-structural timber products and components. Combining hands-on workshop experience with industry-relevant training, the course provides a strong foundation for further study, apprenticeships or employment within the carpentry and joinery sector.

Course Requirements

Applicants should have achieved four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including English and Mathematics. You must also have successfully completed a Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery qualification.

What you will Learn

This course will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to begin a career as a Site Carpenter or Bench Joiner, as well as prepare you for further study or training within the wood occupations sector. You will develop a strong understanding of health and safety in construction, timber technology, and industry working practices. Depending on your chosen pathway, you will gain practical experience in structural carpentry, first and second fix carpentry, circular saw operations, or the production, assembly and finishing of architectural joinery products. You will also complete a health and safety unit that supports the knowledge required to obtain a CSCS Green Card, helping you prepare for work on construction sites across the UK.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out through a combination of knowledge and practical assessments. You will complete end-of-unit multiple-choice tests to demonstrate your understanding of key carpentry and joinery principles, health and safety requirements, and industry practices. You will also undertake a final practical assessment, where you will demonstrate your competence in either constructing timber structures as a Site Carpenter or producing architectural joinery components and products using timber and timber-based materials.

Progression

Successful completion of this qualification can lead to further study in Site Carpentry, Architectural Joinery, or other specialist construction programmes at a higher level. Students may also progress onto a Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship, combining paid employment with further training. The qualification provides a solid foundation for entering the construction industry and developing a rewarding career within the skilled trades.
