Course Overview

This course will be taken alongside two A level subjects. The Level 3 in Criminology is a qualification with elements of psychology, law and sociology that complements studies in humanities.

There are examined units on ‘Criminological Theories’ and ‘Crime and Punishment’ as well as internally set units on the ‘Changing Awareness of Crime’ and ‘Crime Science to Courtroom’.

It is a very suitable programme for those students considering A Levels in the social sciences. In particular, it will aid those who are considering studying a programme including Sociology, Psychology and Law.

Course Requirements

PLEASE NOTE – YOU MUST APPLY FOR 3 A LEVELS

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language).

What you will Learn

On the Level 3 Criminology course, you’ll learn about all aspects of crime from a social perspective: the causes of crime, its social impact and take a look into the criminals that are committing these acts. Criminologist study crime in an attempt to better understand what motivates the criminal to act in that way.

Assessment

Assessment will be 50% coursework and 50% exam based.

Progression

The main purpose of the Level 3 Diploma in Applied Crimonology is to use the qualification to support access to higher education degree courses. These will include combinations of criminology, law, psychology and sociology.

Career Options

You can progress onto degree courses at many universities such as Criminology, Law, Sociology and Policing and Criminal Justice.

Long term, the qualification develops your understanding and skills so that you are able to consider employment in the criminal justice sector, such as in Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service and the Police Service.
