Course Overview

Mathematics has been studied for thousands of years, yet it is still a vital, vibrant, and developing subject, it forms part of every aspect of modern life, for example in Science and Technology, Business and Commerce, it provides essential skills for dealing with the problems of the modern world and encourages the development of logical and enquiring minds

A Level Mathematics will allow you to extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques from GCSE and enable you to understand mathematics in a way that promotes confidence, enjoyment, and a strong foundation to progress with further study.

All students follow the Pearson Edexcel A Level Mathematics specification.

Course Requirements

PLEASE NOTE – YOU MUST APPLY FOR 3 A LEVELS

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language). However, certain subjects may have additional entry criteria, which can be found below:

Additional Entry Requirements:
A Level Maths will require a grade 6 in GCSE Maths and 66 in Science

This subject must also be studied alongside at least one other science-based (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) course.

What you will Learn

A level Mathematics will include topics such as algebra and functions, trigonometry, statistical distributions, and kinematics, and will develop your problem solving abilities, as well as your ability to analyse and interpret data.

Assessment

The course is assessed through three externally examined papers at the end of the 2-year course:

Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 (33.33% of A Level grade)
Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2 (33.33% of A Level grade)
Paper 3: Statistics and Mechanics (33.33% of A Level grade)

Progression

A Level Mathematics is welcomed as a qualification for a variety of Higher Education courses. A Mathematics qualification is vital for some subjects, such as Engineering, and useful for others, such as Biochemistry.

Career Options

There is no shortage or career prospects for those who pursue maths at A level. Other than being a requirement for many degree programmes, maths based careers include data scientist, financial analyst, engineer, statistician and many other.

Mandatory Units

Pure Mathematics 1 & 2: Proof, algebra and functions, geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods, and vectors.

Statistics: Statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, and statistical hypothesis testing.

Mechanics: Quantities and units in mechanics, kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws, and moments.
