Course Overview

The aims of this course are to introduce floristry with the specific focus to displays that can be used over the spring period.

– To encourage sage and efficient working practices
– Topics will include:
– Care and conditioning of flowers
– Principles and elements of design
– Constructing a range of designs in floral foam
– Basic techniques for wiring and taping flowers and foliage
– Designing different styles of arrangements (provided weekly)

Course Requirements

There are no entry requirements, making it accessible to anyone interested in learning about floristry.

Please note – a range of flowers and other items will have to be purchased to attend this course, a list will be provided weekly.

What you will Learn

Care and conditioning of flowers: This topic will teach you how to properly care for and condition flowers to ensure they remain fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.
Principles and elements of design: You will learn about the fundamental principles and elements of design, which are essential for creating aesthetically pleasing floral arrangements.
Constructing a range of designs in floral foam: This section will cover how to construct various floral designs using floral foam, a common material used in floristry to support and hydrate flowers.
Basic techniques for wiring and taping flowers and foliage: You’ll be introduced to the basic techniques for wiring and taping flowers and foliage, which are crucial skills for creating intricate floral designs.
Designing and making a buttonhole: This topic will guide you through the process of designing and making a buttonhole, a small floral arrangement typically worn on a lapel.

Assessment

This is an essentially practical course with no formal assessment. Students will receive constructive verbal feedback each week and will be encouraged to keep a photographic record of their work.
