Stockport-born Sir John Benger inspires local students with insights from Parliament
Students from across Trafford and Stockport College Group’s three Stockport sites had a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the UK’s parliamentary system and explore career pathways in politics beyond party affiliation.
The session was hosted at Fred Perry House in Stockport and delivered in collaboration with Cllr Christine Carrigan from Stockport Council and Nav Mishra MP.
The event featured a keynote talk by Sir John Benger – Master of St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, and former Clerk to the House of Commons.
Born in Stockport, Sir John returned to his hometown to engage directly with students, sharing a compelling personal journey through the corridors of power.
Reflecting on a distinguished career in public service, he explained how he supported politicians from across the political spectrum to navigate parliamentary processes and uphold democratic procedures in shaping the nation’s future.
Michelle McLaughlin, Head of Personal and Professional Development at Trafford and Stockport College Group, said: “We were honoured to welcome Sir John Benger, whose insights offered our students a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Parliament. His message, that political and public service careers are open to all, regardless of background, resonated powerfully with our learners.”
