End of year college extra highlights

Student voice and enrichment have continued to thrive this year, with learners embracing opportunities to lead, influence and engage both within the college and across the wider community. From debating national issues and championing sustainability to shaping local decision-making and celebrating cultural diversity, students have demonstrated confidence, ambition and a commitment to making a positive impact. Here are some of this year’s highlights:

Debate Club

Our Debate Club has continued to go from strength to strength, with students building confidence in public speaking and developing their critical thinking skills through engaging and thought-provoking topics such as misinformation on social media and whether prisons should prioritise rehabilitation over punishment. Students have also had the opportunity to mentor primary school pupils in debating, working in partnership with the Four Rivers Trust, as well as benefit from expert guidance provided by a Director from the Department for Education.

Equalitiies Council

The Equalities Council has had a particularly impactful year, giving students a platform to share their views and influence change. The showcase event, Student Question Time in partnership with GM Colleges, began with a student-led debate, followed by a panel event where learners were able to put their questions directly to politicians, business, and community leaders. Building on this, students delivered a presentation at local council meetings, which led to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) visiting the college to speak directly with students about public transport. This was a powerful example of student voice in action, demonstrating how learners can influence real-world decisions and connect with organisations beyond the college.

Green College Assembly

The Green College Assembly has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability this year. Students attended both the Greater Manchester Green Summit and debated at the Youth Climate Assembly, gaining valuable insight into local and regional environmental priorities. They have brought this inspiration back into college by leading an eco-art project, using creativity to raise awareness and encourage others to think differently about sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Events Planning Team

The Events Planning Team has played a key role in bringing the college community together through a range of inclusive cultural events. Highlights have included Widen Our World and MACFest, which celebrated diversity, encouraged cultural awareness, and created opportunities for students to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another.

Enrichment Opportunities

A wide range of workshops and enrichment experiences have further enhanced students’ personal and professional development this year supported by our community partners. Sessions such as Money Ready have helped learners build essential financial skills, while the Army Half-Day provided insight into teamwork, resilience, and career pathways. The Bridge Programme has supported student literacy skills. Monthly initiatives like Welcome Wednesday brings students together with members of Age UK to host activities that build confidence while supporting intergenerational learning and connection.Partnerships with organisations including Stockport County Community Trust and The Light Cinema have broadened students’ experiences, connecting them with their local community and new cultural opportunities.

Political Literacy

Alongside this, students have developed strong political literacy and civic awareness through a range of meaningful opportunities. Student Constituency Clinic with local MPs allowed learners to engage directly with political representatives, while attendance to the Local Election Hustings gave them first-hand experience of democratic processes. These experiences have helped students build confidence in discussing current issues, understanding different viewpoints, and recognising the importance of active citizenship.

Overall, we are incredibly proud of everything our students have achieved this year and look forward to seeing these opportunities grow even further next year.
