Meet Our Apprentices: Lucy Potts

by india

For National Apprenticeship Week 2022, we’re showcasing some of our apprentices to celebrate their achievements and future career prospects that have been influenced by studying an apprenticeship. We spoke to apprentice Lucy Potts about her experience:

Lucy Potts excelled during her time at college, studying Professional Pastry Chef Level 2 and progressing to Level 3. Her accomplishments include winning the bronze medal for the Confectionary & Patisserie category at the 2021 World Skills Competition.

As well as her studies, she has managed to land an apprenticeship working at the popular entertainment venue Freight Island where she was quickly promoted and trusted with managerial responsibilities at the age of 17.

Lucy’s experience studying an Apprenticeship:

“There were key skills I gained from studying at college that I believe helped me win the bronze medal at the World Skills Competition. Firstly, time management. Having perfected this skill during my college experience, it enabled me to set deadlines and push myself to present my best work within the competition’s timescale.”

“I would recommend my Professional Pastry Chef Level 2/3 courses to a potential student; the tutors are amazing at doing everything in their capability to help you progress and grow as an individual. Also, the work atmosphere was fun and collaborative when we worked in groups. I would say that about the working environment.”

“The skills I’ve acquired at college have contributed to my current work as I have recently been promoted to my workplace and been given manager responsibilities at just seventeen! I would never have won my bronze medal at the World Skills Competition if it wasn’t for my experiences at college.”

Lucy’s Future Plans

In her immediate future, Lucy plans to continue working within the pastry team at Freight Island and hopefully progress further in her department. Eventually, she hopes to find employment as a pastry chef in a successful and reputable London Hotel where she will be able to gain the experience and training needed to travel globally doing patisserie work.
