Course Overview

This course is designed to support learners with SEND to build confidence, independence, and practical life skills through a wide range of real-life experiences. Learning takes place both in the classroom and out in the community, with lessons linked to trips, visits, and guest speakers.

Course Requirements

Interview with a member of the Progression Curriculum team.

What you will Learn

Students will develop their skills gradually and naturally as part of everyday activities. For example, learners will practise speaking and listening skills by preparing questions before meeting visitors or taking part in a range of college activities. They will also learn how to communicate with new people and manage everyday situations. These experiences help learners work towards their NCFE unit criteria and English and maths assessments.

The course is carefully planned each year to meet the individual needs of the group. Activities and external opportunities are chosen based on initial assessments and EHCP targets. For example, where learners need support with independent travel, we include workshops such as participation in National Rail Confidence sessions. Students then practise these skills in real-life situations, through planning journeys, travelling to local destinations, and buying tickets with support.

Throughout the course, learners will take part in practical activities that help them develop key skills such as managing money, travelling safely, and making decisions. Trips and visits play an important role in helping students build independence, resilience, and confidence skills that are essential for their future education, training, and employment.

Assessment

Continual project-based learning is evidenced through presentations, portfolios of evidence, speaking and listening and group discussion. Vocational learning within the catering department provides evidence of transferable skills, such as communication and teamwork.

Progression

On successful completion of the course, learners can progress onto higher-level study programmes, supported internships, or pathways into employment and independent living.
